Postdoctoral Research Position in Causal Inference. Harvard School of Public Health

Duties & Responsibilities: This postdoctoral position is in the Department of Biostatistics of the Harvard School of Public Health, with Judith Lok. Her research develops causal inference methods with applications in HIV/AIDS research. She has developed and applied a new version of Structural Nested Mean Models (SNMMs) to investigate the effect of treatment on a time-varying outcome in observational studies. SNMMs lead to a large class of unbiased estimating equations for the parameters. This leads to interesting opportunities, for example for optimal estimation and for testing model fit. There are several open methodological problems in this area that she would like you to address. Judith wants to use the AIEDRP database of HIV positive patients with acute and early infection to illustrate the new methods.

contribute to the analysis and dissemination of results from ASTROLAB, one of our innovative
epidemiology research projects.

The project
ASTRO-LAB is a 4-year European project (FP7) coordinated by our Unit and conducted together with 6 other partners in 4 European countries. It aims to bring a new knowledge on the risk-benefit ratio of LABA inhalers in asthma treatment in routine care, via an innovative design that combines prescription and claims data, with self-reported data from patients and clinicians. The data are collected within a longitudinal prospective cohort study, where patients (adults and children) from 2 European countries are followed up for a period of up to 24 months. The innovative cohort design has produced a complex and unique dataset from different sources. The project has started in December 2011 and data collection is now ongoing, with first data extractions already available for analysis.

PhD Position in Numerical Analysis in Zurich

Project Description:
1) Background:
The simulation of complicated physcial phenomena consists of several steps which includes the mathematical modeling and the numerical discretization. For the reliability of the solutions, it is of utmost importance to estimate the modeling and numerical errors in an a posteriori way. While the a posteriori control of the numerical discretization error has been developed since the 1980s, the control of the modeling error is still in its infancies and a topic of vivid worldwide research in Numerical Analysis. The recent development of a "functional error majorant" for Poisson-type problems is a first milestone in this direction and its generalization to new problem classes is the topic of these PhD-Projects.
