Duties and Responsibilities: The Department of Biostatistics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking an outstanding applicant to join our tenure track faculty. La Noche Europea de los Investigadores de Madrid 2014. Participa en el show de la Estadística

La Noche Europea de los Investigadores Madrid 2014, se celebrará la noche del 26 de septiembre en diferentes localidades de la Comunidad de Madrid. Su principal objetivo es acercar los investigadores a los ciudadanos para que conozcan su trabajo, los beneficios que aportan a la sociedad y su repercusión en la vida cotidiana. Todo ello en el marco de actividades festivas y lúdicas, cuyos protagonistas son tanto los ciudadanos como los investigadores. Durante la Noche Europea de los Investigadores Madrid 2014 se desarrollarán 25 actividades en diferentes localidades de la Comunidad de Madrid entre las 16:00 y las 24:00 horas.

Este Curso Básico de R  on-line, matricula permanente con una duración fléxible (tiempo recomendado 2 meses) de 150 horas, acreditado por la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos . 

Este curso se ha diseñado para que sea eminentemente práctico, ya que se destina a un uso correcto del programa estadístico R de licencia gratuita. No tendría ningún sentido ir proponiendo ejemplos sin más en los diferentes apartados para luego hacer una evaluación final teórica. Por eso, invitamos al alumno a que vaya replicando las órdenes, las funciones, los diferentes contrastes, los ejemplos propuestos, e incluso que vaya más allá e indague por sí mismo, una vez que consiga un pequeño dominio del programa. Por supuesto, al igual que el curso es práctico en su diseño, la evaluación del mismo también será práctica con ejercicios muy parecidos a los vistos en las diferentes unidades didácticas.

   

OBJETIVOS ESPECÍFICOS

• Conseguir adentrarse en el mundo de la Estadística a través del software R.
• Adquirir las habilidades básicas y un conocimiento suficiente para manejar el software R.
• Saber extraer de R y analizar los gráficos sencillos propuestos.
• Conocer las medidas de posición y dispersión básicas así como la distribución normal a través de las distintas funciones ejecutadas en R.
• Conocer las distintas Técnicas Estadísticas Paramétricas y No Paramétricas, el Anova, la Regresión y Correlación y sus funciones a través del software R.
• Saber reconocer qué nos dicen los datos obtenidos a través de las funciones ejecutadas en R en los diferentes contrastes propuestos, es decir, su inferencia.

Segundas Jornadas Virtuales en Didáctica de la Estadística, Probabilidad y Combinatoria

Las Segundas Jornadas Virtuales en Didáctica de la Estadística, Probabilidad y Combinatoria organizadas por el Grupo de Investigación en Didáctica de la Estadística, Probabilidad y Combinatoria de la Sociedad Española de Investigación en Educación Matemática (SEIEM) y el Grupo de Educación Estadística de la Universidad de Granada, con carácter iberoamericano, que se celebrarán de manera virtual del 10 al 12 de abril de 2015.

La web de las Jornadas es www.jvdiesproyco.es y la participación tiene un coste de 30 euros, tanto en modalidad de asistente virtual, como en la  de presentación de  comunicaciones. Próximamente se publicará en la web el número de cuenta bancaria para re alizar el ingreso o transferencia. We conduct methodologic research in biostatistics and bioinformatics to advance cancer research, provide biostatistics and bioinformatics support to medical investigators in cancer and other conditions, and teach research methodology in a wide variety of academic programs in the Johns Hopkins Schools of Public Health and Medicine. The Division, currently with 14 doctoral-level and 8 masterslevel biostatisticians or bioinformaticians, has strong research and teaching connections with many groups throughout Johns Hopkins University conducting quantitative research in cancer, especially the Department of Biostatistics in the Bloomberg School of Public Health, as well as ties with the Center for Computational Biology and the Center for Computational Genomics.

PhD Fellowship in Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Genomics in Barcelona

A FPI fellowship to carry out a PhD degree in Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Genomics is available at the Bioinformatics of Genomic Diversity and the Comparative and Functional Genomics groups located at the Institut de Biotecnologia i de Biomedicina (IBB) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). The successful candidate will join a young, dynamic, and interdisciplinary team and will collaborate in the research of the group within the project “Understanding genome variation from nucleotides to phenotypes in Drosophila and humans”, funded by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad.

In particular, the PhD project will be focused on the development of models to estimate the action of selection on genome variation, including both SNPs and structural variants, especially inversions, and the integration of population genomics data with functional data to characterize the genomic determinants of evolution. 

La Damatemática y el jardín de las Matemáticas en la Universidad Miguel Hernández

En el informativo de televisión de la Universidad Miguel Hernández de la semana pasada nos presentaban el Jardín de las Matemáticas en el que se sitúa la Damatemática. Esta información me llamo la atención así que voy a informaron un poco más sobre ella.

La Damatemática es una escultura que se creo en el año 2008. La Damatemática’ está basada en la ecuación cúbica del espacio proyectivo (w(x+y+z)2 + xyz=0), curiosamente la pieza se asemeja de forma abstracta a la Dama de Elche y, por eso, los investigadores del CIO la han llamado la ‘Damatemática’. La obra, esculpida en piedra caliza, tiene unas dimensiones de 300 cm. por 257cm. por 127cm. y un peso aproximado de 11.000 kilogramos. Estas proporciones la convierten en la superficie cúbica más grande realizada hasta el momento. La pieza es obra del artista Cayetano Ramírez y es fruto del trabajo conjunto entre el escultor y matemáticos de la UMH, entre los que se encuentra la profesora Mari Carmen Perea. La escultura se ha realizado gracias a la subvención de 20.000 euros concedida por la Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT) del Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología en la convocatoria del Año de la Ciencia 2007.

Call for a doctoral training contract in Catalonia

The Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) seeks joining a doctoral researcher at the research group in Harmonic Analysis and Approximation Theory, leaded by S. Tikhonov, to develop the project detailed in the Annex.

The starting date is January 1, 2015. The contract is one-year long, renewable annually up to three years, subject to a positive report by the supervisor, with a gross annual salary of 14,400 euros for the first year, and 17,835 the second and third years.

Candidates must fulfil the conditions for admission to a PhD program in Mathematics at a university in Catalonia by January 1, 2015, have an excellent academic record and a good level of English. Candidates should send a letter of motivation to crmcalls@crm.cat, the CV and the academic record (with the computation of the average graded weighted according to the credits), before September 23, 2014. Short-listed candidates will be called for an interview from September 24on, in person or by Skype.

Professional Research Assistant at University of Colorado

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a Professional Research Assistant to work in the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory/Physical Sciences Division (PSD) having expertise in data analysis of large climate datasets or their equivalent. The position responsibilities include assisting in analyses of large datasets of climate observations and numerical model simulations, to investigate and understand mechanisms leading to the identification of improved climate forecast skill opportunities on time scales ranging from weeks to decades.

 The applicant will have a Masters in atmospheric science, oceanography, or applied math/statistics. The applicant will have a demonstrated expertise in analysis of global climate model output and observational datasets, or equivalent expertise in multivariate data analysis and predictive modeling techniques such as hidden Markov Models and generalized ARMA.
