Research Associate in Statistics, Imperial College London

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London, to conduct research related to big data and cyber-security under the supervision of Dr Niall Adams and Dr Nick Heard. The project is based around developing statistical and machine learning methodology for large-scale computer network traffic data.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, or a closely related area and equivalent level of professional qualifications and/or experience. It is essential that the successful candidate has expertise in at least one of the following areas: network data analysis, streaming data analysis and Bayesian statistics. In addition to this the successful candidate will have experience with large-scale data pre-processing, modelling large messy data, knowledge of cyber security and solid knowledge of statistics to support teaching responsibilities. Demonstrable skills or enthusiasm for big data systems, large-scale statistical analysis and processing computer network data are essential. Experience with developing research and producing high-quality outputs, including peer-reviewed papers and software, are similarly essential. Familiarity with modern cloud computing systems, such as HADOOP, expertise in a scripting language, such as python and expertise in a statistical language, such as R, or an imperative programming language, such as C++ is also essential.

In addition, the position includes some teaching responsibilities. Primarily, this will be the delivery of a single elective module on the Statistics MSc programme. Other duties will include supervising undergraduate and masters’ projects. Evidence of teaching experience is therefore important.
