Positions in Statistics at the University of Alberta

Assistant Professor - Statistics

Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences

The Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure-track position in the area of Statistics. Appointment at a higher level may be possible under exceptional circumstances. We offer an excellent research environment with a normal teaching load of 2.5 courses per year.

The successful candidate will establish his/her own research program, supervise graduate students, and teach Statistics at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Applicants will have a PhD or international equivalent, demonstrated accomplishments and outstanding promise in research as well as a strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate teaching. A close fit with some of the existing research being presently conducted in the department is an asset. Our Statistics group encompasses a broad spectrum of research interests, ranging from such interdisciplinary areas such as Bioinformatics, Biostatistics and Environmetrics, through core research areas such as Design, Regression, Sampling and notions of Robustness and of Statistical Learning as applied to these and other areas, and on to theoretical investigations as embodied by Mathematical Statistics, Probability, and Stochastic Processes.

The University of Alberta has one of the leading joint Mathematics/Statistics departments in Canada and has strong connections with other scientific institutes, such as the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems (MITACS), and the Banff International Research Station (BIRS). For more information about the Department, please visit our websites at www.mathstats.ualberta.ca and www.stat.ualberta.ca/stat_centre/.

Applicants should submit their curriculum vitae, a research statement, a teaching profile outlining experience and interests, and at least three confidential letters of reference. Review of applications will begin November 14, 2011; however, the competition will remain open until filled. Early applications are encouraged.
