Assistant Professor in Mathematics with emphasis towards complex systems in Stockholm

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes Architecture, Industrial Management and Urban Planning. There are a total of 12,400 full year students at first and second levels, almost 1,900 active (at least 50 per cent) research students and 5,100 employees.
KTH is strengthening its research on a global scale. We are currently looking to recruit 13 Assistant Professors, whom we will offer the opportunity to develop both their research and their teaching. These recruitments are a part of a larger effort and will be conducted within broad areas, ranging from Mathematics and Bioelectronics to Sustainable Urban Development and Process Engineering. The new Assistant Professors will receive a four-year starting grant, and permanent base funding if they qualify as Associate Professors. For more information about the recruitment initiative, see the following web page: www.kth.se/applytoassistantprofessor

Subject field: Mathematics with emphasis towards complex systems

Subject description
The subject should be interpreted in a broad sense and may include fundamental mathematical research, as well as applied mathematics and computational mathematics. Example of areas are nonlinear problems including dynamical systems and partial differential equations and related stochastic models, many-particle systems and statistical mechanics, graph theory and networks, multiscale problems including numerical methods, stochastic geometry, optimization of systems, analysis of and statistics for big data sets.

Duties
Research, teaching, supervision and some administrative duties. The teaching duty will not exceed 30% of the working time. As the position will be joint between two divisions of the department, the candidate is expected to contribute to the activities at both these divisions.
The Assistant Professor will be given the opportunity to develop their independence as researcher and gain accreditation that may allow them to take other faculty positions with higher eligibility requirements (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance). Grounds of assessment
In the assessment, special importance will be put on research expertise within the subject field, demonstrated by international publications. Pedagogical expertise and ability to contribute to education in mathematical subjects is of significant importance. The applicant's long term development potential and ability to establish and develop cooperation within research and education is also of significant importance.
