Project title: What are the determinants of variations in emergency readmissions rates and one-year mortality in patients hospitalized with heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease?
This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who is looking to develop their career as a health services researcher or statistician. The project focuses on quantitative analysis of real NHS and survey data. You will join a small project team studying variations in outcomes in patients with chronic disease, led by Dr Alex Bottle, Non-Clinical Senior Lecturer in Medical Statistics and Principal Investigator. The post is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR, project number 14/19/50).
Using a wealth of routine NHS hospital admissions data (Hospital Episode Statistics, HES), hospital-level and practice-level information on quality of care held and processed by the Unit, the post holder will derive a series of predictive models for mortality and unplanned readmission for two common and costly chronic diseases: heart failure and COPD. We aim to determine how much of the variation in patient outcome is due to patient, primary care and hospital factors and thereby make policy recommendations to the NHS on the management of these diseases. The project follows on from our three-year NIHR study on risk modelling using HES data, completed in 2014.
The post holder will be based at the Dr Foster Unit at Imperial College London, School of Public Health, 3 Dorset Rise, London, EC4Y 8EN, with some travel to other campuses. They will join a small team led by Professor Paul Aylin, Chair in Epidemiology and Public Health. The project team comprises members of the Unit and senior clinicians in primary care, acute medicine and cardiology.
