Head of the School of Mathematics

The University of Edinburgh's School of Mathematics is one of the leading centres for research and teaching in mathematics in Europe. Since 2005, the School of Mathematics has worked in a close partnership with the Departments of Mathematics and Actuarial Mathematics & Statistics at Heriot-Watt University, under the title of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences. As a centre for research and postgraduate training we are one of the largest mathematical groupings in the UK.  In the UK's 2008 RAE the two universities made joint submissions with outstanding results: 70% of our work was rated nationally or internationally leading. A joint submission to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework was also made. Edinburgh is also home to the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), one of the UK's major resources in mathematics, with a superb reputation for hosting workshops at the highest scientific level.

The School covers a very broad range of research topics in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, operational research and statistics. It has over fifty permanent members of academic staff and more than twenty-five research fellows and research associates. The academic staff of the School have significant collaborations with researchers throughout the world.

The University is now seeking to appoint a new Head of School. Candidates for this position will be expected to demonstrate an international research reputation and significant management experience.  Candidates will be of exceptional calibre, able to provide both academic and executive leadership and to act as the external advocate of the School to a range of stakeholders, nationally and internationally.  Candidates will be committed to strengthening and further developing the School's research activities; to maximising the quality and effectiveness of its teaching; and to broadening teaching activities through eLearning and online teaching.

The University of Edinburgh aims to ensure equality of opportunity. Both the University and the School of Mathematics hold Athena SWAN bronze awards.
