Economist, Finance & Leasing Association in London

The main purpose of the FLA’s Economics and Research Department is to assist its members by being a leading resource for UK industry and economic data and to instigate research to support evidence-based policy work which demonstrates the sector’s social and economic contribution.

Job background/context
The FLA is the leading trade association for the UK consumer credit, motor finance and asset finance sectors, and the largest organisation of its type in Europe.

The FLA’s consumer credit members are active in the prime and sub-prime consumer credit markets, and provide a range of services including credit cards, store cards, hire purchase and various other kinds of personal loans, including secured loans (second mortgages). These products are covered by the FLA’s Lending Code, which ensures responsible lending and good customer service. Statutory regulation is provided by the Office of Fair Trading (for consumer credit transactions) and the Financial Conduct Authority (for ancillary financial services).

The FLA represents its members to Government, regulators and international bodies with the aim of improving the working environment within which its members do business.    The FLA’s vision is to be the acknowledged and trusted representative body for the business and consumer finance industries. Either directly or indirectly, member companies employ over 150,000 people in the UK.


Key Responsibilities
  • To carry out survey work.
  • To produce regular economic analysis for inclusion in the FLA’s regular statistics reports.
  • To provide a greater understanding of the markets in which FLA members operate.
  • To identify the potential impact of economic trends and new regulation on members’ business.
  • To present reports to members.
  • To provide general support to the Head of Research and Chief Economist.
  • Undertake any other duties as maybe reasonably required by the Association.
Person Specification
Knowledge/Experience
  • Previous experience of survey work.
  • Previous experience of economic analysis.
  • Previous experience of contributing to economic projects.
  • Computer literate (Microsoft Office, SPSS, Access).
Skills
  • To effectively communicate economic ideas to colleagues and members.
  • Demonstrable ability to express thoughts in clear and concise English, both written and spoken, is essential.
  • Presentation skills.
Qualifications
Graduate in Economics/Econometrics with strong statistics background

  • Self-motivated, confident and proactive.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Able to multitask and prioritise.
